Alright, here's the deal.

I was kicking around today at work, and started to think up what my Dogs of War army is going to look like in 8th, ie what I have, what I want, and what I think I am going to get next.

(before this goes any farther, this is not a 'what is going to be effective in 8th edition thread, just me brainstorming a general list)

I started writing the list like I always do, put in everything I want, cut it down from there, and as time went on, I ended up with something like this.

2x 20 x-Bows
3x 10 Dualists with Pistols
3x 5 Light Cav

20 Halflings
20 Norse
25 Paymasters Guard

2x Hot Pot
2x Cannon
Giant

Now, added to my default character selections of Paymaster (duh), Captasus with 2x Pistols, and Wizard, I realized that my list is quickly turning into a ranged weapons heavy one and so, I decided to come here and ask for advice.

What new unit should I try out? What have you enjoyed converting/building/painting or playing with that is not above? It can be RoR or just block solid Dogs of War.

I'm not looking for the most effective or the best performing, just some opinions on what everyone else likes and what I may enjoy. Thanks!
A unit, which I really, really love (but don't own yet, poor student..) are Rhinox Riders...they're one of the hardest assault units in Warhammer Fantasy, and with 8. Ed. you don't have to care about the fact that they use 2 rare slots!
Either you use a single Bull rider with Warbanner (effective vs. smaller units, or usable as "living chariot") or a full unit of 3 Riders with the Standard Bearer and then Champion on Bulls plus a musician on normal Rhinox. So the oponent has to choose which one to target, and if the musician dies...you can seperate the wounds between champ and standard. But if you don't like the sneaky cheaty way, just play 3 Rhinox Bulls and yell "I'M A HEAVY HITTER!" each time you try to charge with them. Few units can stand against 3 of this bombards in frontal combat, and not even a horde can hope to stand against 3 Bulls in it's flank plus another dogs unit in the front (or vice versa).
As I said, I just love the guys, and sometimes I will buy 3 Forge World riders...just not yet. Wink

Greetings,
Mork
I like your base list. Range and up close firepower, 3 units of fast diverting cav and 2 units of solid hth infantry (the halfling I presume have bows?). To many rares but each has it's own strengths.
I used to love Rhinox cav but now I find them to brittle. 3 Maneaters however are a little more durable yet just as deadly in hth (and they almost move just as fast). Give 1 Maneater GW and the other two pistols and you'll terrify characters all over the board.
If you go in for RoRs then the top choices are undoubtedly Asarnil, The Goblin Hewer and Mengils Manflayers (in a big unit of 10+). All 3 punch well above their weight when used correctly.
When I was theorizing with this list, it was under the vague notion of the 8th ed rumours that rare choices will not be restricted by a number (0-2), but instead have a cap on the percentage of the points of the army (no more than 25% rare) and no more than two of a single choice, thus the 5 rare choices. I have no idea if that will pan out, but as I said, theorizing.

The Maneaters I really like, and you hit the combination I would do right on the head, Horus, with the 2xBrace of Handguns and one with GW. One way or another, I am going to put some Ogres in there, just not leadbelchers. I don't think I can deal with any more firepower.

As for Asarnil, I have 3 High Elf dragons all ready to go for my other army, so anytime I want to use him, I can, but I am giant-lizarded out for now!

What is anyones experience with the Rhinox riders? Are they fairly legal? Like, as legal as the basic army, at least?

And yeah, the Halflings have bows! Never actually used them, but I might be tempted to give it a shot.
