So, I have been playing Dogs of War for a little while now, and Fantasy for several years. I had always wanted to do Dogs of War, and after becoming completely disenfranchised with my High Elves (no new models, cut and paste book, terrible rules, ect, ect) I have decided to give them a shot.
This is my current base army, 1250 points, which is about the normal small game size for my gaming group.
Captain 50pts
Pegasus - 50
Heavy Armour - 4
Enchanted Shield - 10
Sword of Might - 20
Brace of Pistols - 14
Total - 148pts
My standard Captasus. Tries to manuever around and hunt warmachines, enemy ranged units, fast cavalry, or just help out where needed. I really like this choice, though it does take my general and thus his leadership away from the army, which is a huge downside, leaving me at Ld 7 for most things
Paymaster 55pts
Barded Horse - 14
Heavy Armour - 4
Shield - 2
Morning Star - 2
Total - 77pts
Simple way of having my Paymaster with a 2+ armour save, plus an extra S3 attack. The Morning Star seems like the best choice for him, giving him 2 S5 attacks the first turn for very cheap, without affecting his survivability
25 Pikemen 250pts
Heavy Armour - 25
Full Command - 30
Total - 305pts
What can I say, I love 'em. I even take them against Wood Elves! In larger, say 2250 games I run two units, one being Ricco's.
10 Crossbowmen 80pts
Total - 80pts
Crossbows get a bad rap, but they have consistently proven themselves worthwhile for me. Not so long ago I combined both units into one, ranked them up 5x4, and put them between my two combat units, specifically because I was fighting Skaven with a Hellpit-Abomb and a Plague Furnace, so I was in a large target rich environment, and it allowed me to concentrate force and castle up well.
10 Crossbowmen 80pts
Total - 80pts
8 Dualists - 40pts
Pistols - 32
Total - 72pts
Your standard Dualists, though I am still not a pro at using fleeing skirmishers to cause enemies to charge at angles, I am working on it.
8 Dualists - 40pts
Pistols - 32
Total - 72pts
5 Light Cavalry - 55pts
Spears - 11
Shields - 22
Musician - 15
Total - 103pts
My current unit actually has crossbows modeled onto them, but I can only afford that tremendous waste of points in larger games.
5 Heavy Cavalry - 95pts
Barding - 10
Total - 105pts
I played around without barding these for sometime, for the extra movement it afforded me, but now that I have actual barded models for them, why fight it?
15 Paymasters Bodyguard - 135pts
Heavy Armour - 15
Full Command - 30
Warbanner - 25
Total - 205pts
Probably the most contentious choice in the army. I love these guys, more so when they are 25 strong in a 5x5 for great static combat res, but in smaller games they are good like this. They have consistently done well for me, or been utterly destroyed in ways which I cannot possibly blame them (direct hit from Plague Claw Catapult followed by irresistable force Plague spell, rolling 12x2 for their break test, then running 2 inches, ect).
So far, at this points level I have two wins against the new skaven, one against Tomb Kings, one loss to Wood Elves (being entirely the result of the aforementioned complete break test failure) and one loss to Lizardmen.
I have been considering putting the Crossbows into one unit, as, historically, there is normally either only one really good spot to put them, and the other unit accomplishes very little, or one (or both) are whittled down or panicked away. Either way, a larger unit would help prevent this and, combined with the fact there are so many more Large Targets in the game now, and that the reduction of one unit will not change the fact I out deploy almost every army i face, i am going to have to try it out.
As for my complete lack of magical defence, I have on occasion scavenged enough points for a level 1 mage with 2x Scroll, but honestly, it's not worth it. At 1500 i will, but right now, a magic heavy army like Vampires is going to dominate the phase whether I put a chracter into it or not, so I may as well try for more boots on the ground, higher unit strength, ect.
Anyways, thoughts? Ideas? Anyone run a similar list and have any success with it?
