I've seen a few people playing it at a shop by my mother-in-law a few years ago. It looked like fun but nobody was playing it by me.
By and large it's cheaper than Warhammer, especially the starting up cost. The rules take a bit of getting used to since it's a little more complex than Warhammer.
Complex rules isn't a problem, Warhammer has dumbed down too much. Getting a place and people to play is the problem.

Well, someone has to play the bad guys. In alot of WWII games I Play German, Japan if I can, All because everyone else wants to be the Americans, Brits or Russians. Got to love the tanks, I remember a game (forget what WWII game it was). I was defending a town lost two panzers in the frist couple of turns, had a tiger (usally don't take them, like the Jagdpanzer IV/70(V) better) come around a house, took out two shermans like they were standing still, came on the two fireflies (the ones that took out the panzers). The frist when up in flames, and the second almost got away, but it bought the farm, all thanks to an elite crew in the tiger.
Tell us how things go for ya, would be nice to see the battle report. Hmmm...might have to get my combat mission game back out. Happy Hunting Slick, just watch out for tank hunters.
I like FOW, its a better game in many ways than anything of GW's,
And my eyeties are pure awesome and win!
Never played FOW does look good played other systems like Rapid Fire and Operation WW2 from Alterie couple of years ago in 15mm . Played the Germans and loved the 88mm AT gun many a Sherman has been 'brewed up' in past battles !
I like Rules of Engagement a 28mm game, i play as Brits or Finns since everyone knows Finland is the better of the Scandinavian countries
Damn it, Baumann! Just because we stayed "neutral" during WWII, doesn't makes us any worse! Ok, maybe a little bit...
Stupid Swedish government...
Face it M4c, their highest scoring ace had a higher tally than any Allied pilot AFAICR.
I play Brits because as far as most people seem to be aware, the war was fought by America against Germany and Japan.
And i play Finland because everybody loves the underdog, and no-one even remembers they took part in the war. Well technically they had two wars of their own only marginally related to WW2 but hey.
Do the Finns have units on skis?
Yes, but then most combatants did.
I remember watching the WWII documentaries for history class and telling that the Russians had trouble with the Finns because of their soldiers were skiers. No wonder they were good and the Biathlon.
The Russians had trouble with the Finns because they weren't prepared to face an opponent who was actually going to fight to the last. Against the Germans, once they had broken the stalemate they were fighting against tired men who were far from home and had to fight as an army. The Finns were on their home turf, fighting to maintain their independence and willing to throw the rulebook out the window. Anything went, including blowing the ice of frozen lakes while Russian convoys were crossing.
Sounds like they took a page out of the American Revolution playbook. The Americans (especially early in the war) couldn't stand toe-to-toe with the British Military but Guerrilla Warfare worked until we got support from other countries.
so are these 20mm ?? Tanks

Thanks! I only have a few tanks at the moment. I'm trying to figure out which midwar German army I want to do. I've got a couple of Stugs waiting for paint and a Panzer IV. I really do need to get some infantry though. So far I like the fact that you can paint a unit/vehicle in a short time and not have to worry about too many tiny details.
The Panzer IV is a bit odd though, as it is a plastic, metal, and resin kit.
As far as the company goes, I like the fact that they're very up front with upcoming releases etc , unlike a certain other gaming monopoly

and they feature some of the basic rules for units etc on the site so you can get a good idea of how the unit performs instead of just trying to play up the awesome or cool buy me now tactic of GW. Releases are also more regular and evenly spread out across the armies so certain armies don't have to wait a decade or so for an update

(*dark eldar).
hey slick, i just started up FoW germans as well. My grandma's brother was in the Afrika Korps so that's what I'm building, sooo much easier to paint the little tanks than little infantry i reckon.
get some more pics up if you can
liam

Cool! Axis always needs more players. I am going with an Ostfront force just because there are far more options there than Afrika Corps. Although those lists do have some fun stuff as well. Here are some pics of the army as it is (just got a coat of primer on yesterday). I did finish one of my PaK 40s as well so there'll be pics soon.
You've seen the Tiger I already, so here is what else has been added. For some more armor I added a pair of StuGs and a Panzer IV H (figuring out how to add those armor skirts deserves a medal). For some static anti-tank I picked up a full platoon of 7.5cm PaK40s which necessitated picking up 3ton trucks to transport them. Those are pictured right side. On the left I just picked up a full MG platoon which contains 4 MG34s. On to the infantry, the Grenadiers! I just picked up my second platoon which allows me to now field two platoons at 3 sqauds each (30 troops). In the very front you also see the company HQ. This, along with the Tiger gets me well past the 1k points mark. I still need to pick up several pieces: I'm considering some 88s, Stukas, more Stugs, maybe some Panzer IIIs, and certainly a mortar & artillery platoon. The one Tiger tank might get lonely so I might have to get a second one sometime as well. Our group recently played our first game and it was quite a blast --- a welcome change of pace and scale from Warhammer. It was a team game with Italians and Germans vs Brits and Americans. For the most part my dice failed me throughout the game and it was essentially the Italian artillery that won us the game as it was just devastating turn after turn. My StuGs were having trouble putting Shermans out of action, due more to my lousy rolling than the effectiveness of the tanks. In the last turn however I did manage to position the StuGs for rear shots on the 2 remaining Shermans, destroying both. At this point the Allied side really only had a few remnants left. Massacre for the Axis forces!

Nice army !! so i see you like the Germans
Yup. It's nice to have tanks with armor and real guns
I should have a few more pics up tomorrow. Finished the trucks for my AT platoon and a few MG squads.
Hi all, another Flames of War update. Here we have the 3-ton Trucks that are part of my PaK 40 AT platoon. This adds some mobility to the otherwise static guns, in case I need to pack them up and relocate to a better position. Comments welcome!

Hi all, another Flames of War update. This time we have tanks! I have some work in progress pics on the makings of my Stug G platoon. Here are the first two tanks. They still need their cammo patterns painted on. Thus far, they are proving quite deadly against Shermans although their weak side/rear armor is concerning as is the fact that the guns are hull mounted meaning it's hard to get them firing at full ROF. I'll have to add more to the platoon soon. Comments welcome!
