Just wondering, Ive only played one training game, Ive mostly been building my armies for the last 3 months and reading all of the Warhammer books I can find!!!

But, how would I use a retainer/bodyguard for a champion/captian/lord???

Umm can you elaborate? The Paymaster has the Paymaster's Bodyguard unit... but there really isn't a retainer/bodyguard unit out there that you can give your heros. You can put your heros in virtually any unit and could consider them his bodyguard for fluff purposes...
Of all the "bodyguards" you can have for your Characters, Pistol Duellists, HA&S Dwarves, and massed Pike blocks are the best choices - plenty of wounds to absorb shooting, some response to being charged, and generally hard to kill.
It really depends on the army and you must have the right hero/lord in that unit as well. For Dogs of war, it is the Paymaster and the Paymaster's Bodyguard. In the wood elf, The Eternal Guard act as Bodyguards, but you have to have Highborn or noble in that unit. As for the other armies, I don't remember which ones have Bodyguard units (don't have the books in front of me). Most of the Bodyguard unit are Stubborn or gain Stubborn with that type of Hero/Lord in the unit.

As for using a Bodyguard unit, it comes down to two uses for now (with you just starting out). Either use to hold the line somewhere or use them as a Hammer to slam in the ememies flank or to aid other unit. Just cause they are elite doesn't mean that won't break or get wiped out, they are just less likely to do so.

Just try them out for yourself, have fun with them. In the end use what works for you.
